Envelope art.

May 15th, 2010

I have always had an affinity for patterns and textures, especially those found in envelopes. As a child my way of helping our family business was to help my parents sort the mail when coming back from holiday. I used to cut out the stamps and send them to charities as they can sell them and make a small profit. I have always been a bit of a hoarder and I used to save the insides of the envelopes to make collages with. There is a surprising variety of patterns found on your everyday envelope, from waves to polka dots. I have a friend working for Royal Mail and they are currently creating a catalogue of the stamps available. It is a mammoth task and is in its early stages but I will keep you posted. (Sorry about the bad pun.) I have recently revisited this old past time and I here is what I have come up with so far:

A cloud mobile as we’re just though the april showers and I have some dark patterned envelopes that I want to make into storm mobiles, but that’s another day, here is my prototype.

I have also been working on some hexagonal postal art, I don’t think this is the final composition but here is what I have so far. I am originally from Jersey in the Channel Islands hence all the Jersey stamps. We don’t have the same stamps as in England and the ones with pictures on come as standard. I miss these stamps, they are beautiful! If you know me feel free to send me letters with pretty stamps.
